The Single-Strand Updo

A single loose strand left at the front of an updo has become one of the most shared hair looks of the season. It is soft, a little romantic, and works whether you are heading to a Christmas party or a wedding.

What is a single-strand updo?

It is exactly what it sounds like: your hair is pinned up in a bun, twist or braid, and one deliberate strand is left out at the front to frame the face. The key word is deliberate. It should look effortless, but it is placed carefully so it falls where it flatters you.

Which updos suit it

A messy low bun is the easiest place to start. Soft braids and relaxed twists also work well, which is why the look is popular for bridesmaids. Sleeker styles, such as our 90s princess updo, can carry one strand too if you want a more polished finish.

Where to place the strand

Position matters. Starting at the cheekbone draws attention to your face shape, while a strand from the temple adds softness near the eyes. Your stylist can curl or bend it so it holds, and a light mist of hairspray keeps it from drifting.

Party season and wedding guests

If you are booking for December, plan your updo for the day of the event and ask for a style that will last through dancing. Our guide to Christmas party hairstyles has more options.

Making it last

Second-day hair holds pins better than freshly washed hair, so avoid washing immediately before your appointment. Bring a photo and tell your stylist how much movement you want.
