Is Your Hair Ready to Go Grey?
Most grey transitions that go wrong were decided before anyone picked up a brush. The wrong expectation, an undeclared box dye, a timeline nobody talked about.
That’s why every Grey Transition Programme at Gusto starts with a Grey Blueprint consultation. Here’s what we look at, and why it matters.
How Much Grey, and Where

Twenty percent grey at the temples is a very different project from seventy percent all over. Where your grey sits matters as much as how much there is. A bright streak at the front can become the feature of the whole look. Salt and pepper through the crown needs a finer, more even blend.
We’ll look at your roots in daylight and map your pattern, because that pattern is what we design around.
What’s Already on Your Hair

This is the big one. Years of permanent tint, box dye, semi-permanent glosses and highlights all behave differently when we try to lift them towards grey. Dark permanent colour is the most stubborn, and it can’t be lifted by putting more tint on top.
Be completely honest here, including the supermarket box from three years ago. Henna and some “natural” or compound dyes in particular can react badly with lightener, so we need to know before we plan anything.
How Your Hair Is Holding Up

Lifting old colour takes some lightener, so the condition of your lengths decides how far we can go in one session. We strand test a hidden section to see how your hair responds, and we use bond protection throughout. If your ends are fragile, the plan may lean more on lowlights and the cut, and less on lightening.
The Contrast Between Your Base and Your Grey

The darker your natural base, the more contrast there is between it and your grey, and the more blending it takes to stop that contrast looking like regrowth. Lighter bases often blend faster. Neither is better. They just need different plans, and darker hair may need an extra refining session.
How You Feel About Tone

Grey can be worn cool and silvery, soft and pearly, or with a hint of warmth. Your skin tone, your wardrobe and frankly your taste all come into it. We’ll show you options and choose a tone that you’ll still like at week eight, then build your Silver Gloss around it.
Your Timeline and Your Patience

We’ll be straight with you. Going grey properly takes a few planned sessions and some months of trims. If you need it done in one afternoon for an event next week, this isn’t the moment, and we’d rather tell you than over-process your hair. If you can give it a season, we’ll make sure it looks good the whole way. See The Grey Transition Timeline for what each stage involves.
What to Bring With You

A little preparation makes the consultation far more useful:
- Photos of your hair at its best. Pictures of you, not just inspiration shots, show us how your natural colour and texture behave.
- Your colour history. Roughly how long you’ve been colouring, what with, and when you last did it. Box dye, henna and home glosses all count.
- A few grey looks you like. Silver, pearl, salt and pepper, a bright streak at the front. It helps to see what you’re drawn to, and what you’re not.
- Your diary. We’ll pencil in The Break and The Refine together, so it helps to know when you’re away or have a big event coming up.
Come with your hair as you normally wear it, without fresh colour, so we can see your real grey pattern.
What Happens Next

At the end of your consultation, you get a written plan, a session date for The Break, a patch test at least 48 hours beforehand and an honest idea of total cost. No pressure to book on the day.
