Keeping Grey Bright: The Maintenance Guide

Going grey frees you from the monthly root tint. It doesn’t free you from caring about your hair. The difference between grey that looks chosen and grey that looks neglected is almost always tone and shine, and both are easy to keep on top of once you know what’s working against you.

Why Grey Turns Yellow

Keeping Grey Bright: The Maintenance Guide

Grey and white hair has no pigment to hide behind, so anything that tints it shows straight away. The usual culprits are UV from the sun, heat from straighteners and hot tools, smoke and city pollution, and minerals in the water.

London is a particular problem. The water here is hard, and the calcium and magnesium in it build up on the hair over time, leaving it dull, rough and warm-toned. We’ve written about how this affects men’s grey blends in Why Grey Blends Fade Fast in London, and the same applies to everyone.

The Silver Gloss: Your Main Maintenance

The single most effective thing you can do for grey hair is a regular gloss. Ours, the Silver Gloss, neutralises yellow, cools and evens out the tone, and adds the kind of shine that makes grey look expensive rather than tired.

Every six to eight weeks is the sweet spot for most people. It’s a short appointment and it’s the core of the maintenance in our Grey Transition Programme. Read more about how glossing works on our Hair Glossing page.

Silver Shampoo, Used Properly

Silver and purple shampoos deposit a little violet pigment to cancel yellow. They work, but more isn’t better. Used every wash, they can leave grey hair looking flat, dull or faintly lilac.

Once a week is plenty for most people. Leave it on for a minute or two, rinse, and follow with a conditioner. On the other days, use a gentle, moisturising shampoo.

Heat, Sun and Water

A few small habits make a big difference to how long your tone lasts:

  • Heat protectant every time. Hot tools are one of the fastest ways to yellow grey hair. Turn your straighteners down a notch, too.
  • Cover up in strong sun. A hat on holiday does more for your tone than any product.
  • Clarify now and then. A clarifying or chelating shampoo every few weeks lifts mineral build-up from hard water. A shower filter helps as well.

Moisture and Texture

Grey hair often grows in coarser, drier and more wiry than the hair it replaces. A weekly mask and a light leave-in conditioner help it sit smoothly and reflect light. Bond-building treatments such as Olaplex are worth considering if your lengths have been lightened during your transition.

Your Grey Routine at a Glance

Every wash: a gentle, moisturising shampoo and conditioner, and a heat protectant before styling.

Once a week: silver shampoo, left on for a minute or two, plus a nourishing mask.

Every few weeks: a clarifying wash to clear hard-water build-up.

Every six to eight weeks: a Silver Gloss in the salon to reset tone and shine.

Every eight to twelve weeks: a cut. Grey looks its best with a sharp shape, because the colour is quieter and the cut does more of the talking.

Signs You’re Due Back In

You don’t need to count the weeks. Your hair will tell you. Book in when the grey starts to look creamy or yellow in daylight, when it’s lost its shine even after a mask, or when the ends feel rough and catch on your fingers. Those are all signs the gloss has worn off and the hair needs a reset.

Ask us at your next appointment and we’ll put together a home routine for your hair, or pick up your essentials in our online shop.
